Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol that inhibits bacterial growth without killing existing bacteria. This specialized water is primarily used to dilute or dissolve medications for patient injections.

You cannot buy bacteriostatic water over the counter in most places, as it is typically a prescription-only or "Rx only" product due to its use in injectable medications. You can obtain it from pharmacies, medical supply stores, or online retailers that require a prescription or have specific licensing for its sale.
